Winding Gear, Naxos

There is more to holiday islands in Greece than lying on the beach under a blue sky. There are abandoned emery mines under a grey sky too. This is the winding gear for a system of pylons, cables and buckets that took emery from the mines near Lionas on Naxos over the hills to a small harbour on the coast at Moutsouna. Some attempt was made to make the site suitable for tourists but it now seems abandoned.
