Unfinished Statue

This unfinished statue of a young man (a kouros) lies near where it was cut from the bedrock on the Greek island of Naxos. It is one of several and was probably abandoned because a crack appeared in one leg. It dates from the time of classical Greece so is over 2000 years old. It gives an insight into how such things were made. A rough shape was cut out at the quarry then it was moved for final sculpting elsewhere. The face has not worn smooth, it was simply never finished.
