Description
The Beanery, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam
This walk-through construction, which would probably be called an installation today, was created in 1965 by the American artist Edward Kienholz. It is named The Beanery after a bar in Los Angeles and is now in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
It is a jokey yet disturbing space. All the characters' heads have been replaced by clock faces. The time is about ten past ten - the time used in jewellers shops for clocks and watches on display, in other words fake time.
