The Sun Finally Sets on the Railway, Nafplio

This is the "New Station" at Nafplio, Greece in 2013.  It was a terminus for part of the Peloponnese railway.  That was a narrow gague (one metre / 3ft 3in) network that connected to Athens, Corinth and other towns in the Peloponnese.  Apparently starved of investment, almost the whole remaining network was shut down in 2011 as a result of the Greek debt crisis.  Only a couple of specialist sections survive.

Although Nafplio is still a working port, tourism is now a major source of income.  An attempt was made to turn the defunct rolling stock into a cafe though this has now closed as well.  There are still engines, including steam engines, available and carriages too.  If this line were in Britain groups of enthusiasts would have taken it over and turned it into a heritage line.  We have dozens of them e.g. the Ffestiniog Railway www.festrail.co.uk/index.htm .  They bring in revenue as well as preserving the line.  There does not seem to be any appetite for projects like this in Greece so it looks destined to just rot away.
