Pompeii and Vesuvius

Description

Pompeii and Vesuvius, Naples Region, Italy.

Pompeii was a Roman city by the Gulf of Naples. It was buried by an eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE which covered it in pyroclastic flows and ash.

The excavated site is huge, you can easily spend a whole day going round without seeing all of it. Much of the remains are low walls, but some buildings are more intact.  See also

Roman Fresco, Herculaneum by bobswin
from nearby Herculaneum.

Vesuvius is visible in the background. It is about 9Km (5.5 miles) away. There have been several minor eruptions over the centuries, but none on the scale of the original one.
