The Tyne Bridge, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, October 2009.

Long before steam punk there was Newcastle engineering, which often dwarfs the local inhabitants. The Tyne Bridge crosses the River Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead. It has a very high clearance above the river to allow for the large ships that used to navigate the Tyne.
This relatively close up shot shows the load being transferred to the base of the tower on the Newcastle side. A giant hinge allows for heat expansion. You need the light to be at just the right angle to pick out the rivets like this. The streaks of white are kittiwake guano. The birds have made the bridge their home, sometimes to the inconvenience of human passers by ...
