Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Interior - B

Description

Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral Interior - B

Liverpool has two cathedrals, both built in the 20th Century but reflecting very different styles. This is the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral. It is a modernist design by Frederick Gibberd and was built in the 1960s.

The interior is striking. Firstly it is very blue. Not the surfaces themselves but the light coming through the stained glass. A deep almost hypnotic, saturated blue. For a Catholic church it is relatively lacking representations of the human form. Also it is very open compared to the narrow naves of traditional churches. The circular design means the whole roof is self-supporting so there are no columns breaking up the main space at all. As a large, circular, dark blue space it is quite difficult to photograph effectively but this shot gives a reasonable impression.  See also

It won't be long before I have my graduation in that very hall this year.

Despite my sorrow for the cathedral that never went on as planned, this is defiantly a vision of modern art that captivates the people and their faith.
