Heart of Midlothian, Edinburgh

Description

The Heart of Midlothian, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, Scotland. July 2011.

The "Heart of Midlothian" can mean three different things.
- This heart of stone sets on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, the location of a tolbooth (prison) and gallows.
- A novel by Walter Scott.
- A football (soccer) team.

It is traditional for locals to spit on the heart as a sign of their contempt for the harsh and cruel punishments meted out to prisoners here, most of whom were from the city's poor. The brass rectangle set into the stones at the lower right marks the position of the gallows.

Now it is also a tourist curiosity, and the use of the heart as an emblem by a football team has added to its ambiguity.

Please download for full-sized image (1258 x 840 pixels, 622KB).  Camera, Lumix LX5. Processed with Photoshop Elements v8. As the colours in the stone only show up well when wet, I have increased the saturation during the processing of the image to make them clearer.

Constructive criticism welcome.
