Drowned Crypt with Goldfish, Ravenna, Italy

This is one of the less important mosaics in Ravenna, in the 10th century crypt of the St Francis (San Francesco) Basilica. Its claim to fame is that is flooded with ground water. Although the ancient harbour silted up centuries ago the water table is rarely far below the surface. Two goldfish can be seen swimming on the right hand side of the picture. I am not sure what they get to eat! Some coins have also been thrown into the water, rather a pagan practice for a catholic church.
