Chesterfield Church Crooked Spire

Description

Chesterfield Church Crooked Spire

St Mary and All Saints in Chesterfield is the largest church in Derbyshire, England. The Spire stands 228 feet (almost 70m) from the ground. It is twisted through 45 degrees and leans 9 feet 5 inches (2.8m) from its true centre. The Spire was built straight. The reason that it 'twisted' may be the amount of green timber used during its construction, though the effects of the lead covering may also have contributed. The unique shape makes repairs a challenge, but has become a landmark for the town.
